How to protect computer from power surge or failure?

Power surge and power failure can cause serious damage to computer hardware, loss of valuable data and corruption of the Windows operating system.  A UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) can protect computers from power spike and power failure.  In the event of power failure, the UPS battery continues to supply electricity so that unsaved data can be saved and the computer can be safely shut down.  UPS is a must for any mission-critical computers. 

The costs of UPS's range from $40 to $100. A $5-$10 surge protector may provide some protection against power spikes, but not power outage or failure.

How to protect dial-up modem or DSL modem?

Electric spikes in phone line can damage a modem.  Isolating problems with a modem can be very time-consuming.  When buying a surge suppressor or UPS, choose those that has a built-in phone jack for modem protection.
